Seventeen years after I discovered typing (see photo featuring proud grandmother) I began my advertising career, working as a copywriter for a small agency in Connecticut.
Eventually, though, the big city beckoned. So I took a week of vacation, flew out to Chicago, got a room in a cheap motel at the end of a Midway Airport runway, and, between the roar of passing jets, cold called pretty much every agency in town. Surprisingly, I got in to show my portfolio more places than not. I suppose they wanted to see what kind of moron would fly to Chicago on his own dime thinking he could cold call himself into a job in a week. But it worked.
During my years in Chicago I did advertising for the White Sox, Amoco gasoline and auto repair, Budget Rent A Car, and the American Dairy Association, among others.
From there I went to J. Walter Thompson, Detroit, where I spent six great years. My clients ranged from Ford and Goodyear to Carharrt clothing and White Castle restaurants.
After a break to work on an optioned screenplay I moved to Wisconsin, where I spent eight years working for Madison's largest agency and a small Milwaukee shop. The client list included Kraft, Miller, LaCrosse outdoor footwear, TDS Telecom, the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, State Financial Bank and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Today I'm a freelance copywriter and creative director working for select clients and agencies in Wisconsin and elsewhere.
I handle consumer and business-to-business advertising and a wide range of collateral and marketing materials. Give me a call.
